The creation of the then Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) in 1994, to manage the EU’s unitary trademark system, marked a turning point in the management of intangible assets in the European Union. Today, the renamed European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is not only a clear success story (It is estimated that today, in 95% of cases, it is the preferred method for covering the countries that make up the EU.) but also the main instrument for implementing EU intellectual property policy and managing intangible assets.
Over the years, EUIPO has taken on new responsibilities, including Community designs (2003), orphan works (2012), hosting the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights, running EU-funded IP projects… from December 1, 2025, managing geographical indications for craft and industrial products…. Its clear goal is to become the “IP hub offering – together with the national and regional IP offices of EU Member States – high-value IP services to citizens and businesses” (Strategic Plan 2030).
For anyone looking to manage their EU intellectual property efficiently—a market of 450 million people (5.6% of the world population) representing nearly 15% of global GDP—EUIPO has become an essential point of reference.
